Shame on the elitist theatre critics. Review by: Heaven to Betsy's Ramon, May 18, 2009 |
If Broadway were to listen to them, there would be no sets, no choreography, -Just a rock on stage which they could call brilliant existentialism. The critics got this one wrong. The show is what a Broadway Musical should be. Lavish Sets, Exciting Choregraphy and great performances. Shame on the elitist New York Theatre Critics. Buy a ticket and enjoy yourself. Oh and if you like rocks? Stare at one in your back yard. |

| These three women were incredible. It's the best show I've seen since Wicked and it's not getting the attention it deserves. Run to get tickets. |

What a Blast! Review by: EPR, May 16, 2009 |
I loved the movie and was really looking forward to see the show on Broadway with great expectations and was not disappointed at all. Marc Kudisch was simply hillarious as the sexist boss. Good music by Dolly Parton and choreography was great too.

"9 to 5" Marquis Theatre If you have fond memories of the 1980 film and are looking for a mostly faithful staged recreation of the film, you'll love the new show opening this week at the Marquis Theater. On the other hand, if you're hoping for a reinvention of the Dolly Parton-Lily Tomlin-Jane Fonda reeler, look elsewhere, as there is very little that is fresh about this effort. Oh, a few new lines have been added and the Lily Tomlin ... read more character gets a love interest, but that's about it. Not that that's so awful. "9 to 5" is a highly-entertaining -- if ridiculously implausible -- story, filled with outsize characters and farcical action. In fact, it's the elements of farce that give "9 to 5" the musical its biggest boost. The physical action -- especially the kidnapping of villain CEO Franklin Hart -- is perfect for the stage. All this -- the solid foundation of a good story and lovable (and hateable) characters -- combined with top-notch work in staging and lighting, plus a first-rate troupe of choristers make "9 to 5" a crowd-pleaser. Unfortunately, for this member of the crowd, the production never really found its feet. Allison Janney (in the Lily Tomlin role), much as I love her acting, doesn't seem comfortable in the part yet. Her voice, while pleasing and in pitch, simply isn't powerful enough for a Broadway house. There's no Susan Boyle moment here. The other key roles are strong, but the cast doesn't feel like a true ensemble yet. That said, the audience loved the show (and I loved being able to say "hello" to John Cleese, one of my heroes, who was sitting behind me), and it should have a decent run, especially with female audiences, who will no doubt appreciate the "womyn-power" theme. I'm guessing the mostly male crowd of critics will be a tad less kind. *They were. Much less |

9 to 5 the Musical!!! Review by: , May 5, 2009 |
| I saw 9 to 5 the Musical on opening night and it was wonderful! The choreagraphy was amazing and eye catching. The show included Dolly Parton's songs from the 1980 hit "9 to 5" to new songs just for the show like "Shine Like the Sun" These will stay with you for days! Also, the set is its own character. The set is brilliantly done and adds alot to the show. The singing is stronger in some actors like Megan Hitly (Doralee) giving a spot on Dolly ... read more impersonation, while making the role her own, and Stephine J. Block, Judy, making the audience fall in love with her from her solo "Get Out and Stay Out." Alison Janney, 2009 Tony Nominee, shined in her role as Violet adding her personality and charisma to the chracter. The villian Franklin Hart Jr. (Marc Kudish) was good and definetly had some funny and memorable scenes. The comedy in this show is hysterical and there is no reason not to go including if you didn't see the movie. 9 to 5 is the hot new night on Broadway! |

A Feel Good Musical Review by: Susan, May 3, 2009 |
| I went to the show with some tepidation, after reading the reviews. Critics are not always right. 9 to 5 was just what the doctor ordered for these times. Hilty is a dead ringer for Dolly Parton. Janney does a great, as does the entire cast. The scenery, unlike most recent productions is abundant and well executed. The music is lively and everyone will leave the theatre happy. |

A Hit Start to Finish Review by: jt, May 2, 2009 |
The play was spectacular start to finish. We enjoyed every minute. The songs, the music, the acting, the choreography and the breathtaking sets. It's more than a fun night out. It's a chance to see what makes a Broadway musical the beloved entity it is.

Overtime Review by: Puppy, Apr 25, 2009 |
Just saw the show tonight and truly, really, deeply wanted to love it. However, hard to love a show with so little heart. There were many moments in the show where the audience should have been screaming/crying because we were all rooting for the girls...but we were cheated. Good: great new tunes by Dolly Parton. Simple, heartfelt and perfect throughout. Dazzling lighting and a wonderfully cinematic set. ... read more Almost perfect casting and great ensemble acting as well. Bad: For a show full of dancing there isn't one inspired moment. Plus,it all seemed to be the same dance moves over and over again. I felt the sets and costumes were too straight. I think stretching reality a bit would have been a big plus. Not enough visual fun at all. The first act is really long and the second act is slight and uninteresting. Nine to Five has all the ingredients to be a smash hit and that's what is making me sad. Remember what a terrific show Legally Blonde should have been? Like that. |

Cute But Forgettable Review by: nycnative, Apr 25, 2009 |
| Do you really want to spend $100-$125 for "cute"? "9 to 5" is to theatre what Twinkies are to filet mignon--enjoyable junk food. While the production and cast are excellent, the show is totally middle of the road in terms of creativity, excitement and the memories it will leave you with. It's the kind of show where tour buses will be lined up for matinees. The music is completely forgettable and the lyrics of the "spoon-moon-june" variety. ... read more You'll do far better taking the same amount of money and seeing "Billy Elliot", which is vastly superior. |

Loved it Review by: theatreteacher, Apr 25, 2009 |
| I took a group of 30 high school students and 9 adults to the performance on Apr. 14. I never heard a single negative comment and a ton of positive ones. Personally, I thought the show was fantastic. The performances, the score by Dolly, the fluid set changes, and the amazing choreography all worked beautifully. This sow deserves to be a major hit. |

Great Bang for the Buck Review by: Broadway Junkie, Apr 23, 2009 |
| Saw this on the 18th, and loved it. Lots of fun; terrific performances by the cast. Can't wait to get the cast album! Love the set design -- scenes meld and merge fluidly. Fave scene is pot-smoking dream sequence. Allows for some old-style big broadway numbers mid-show with lots of singing and great choreography. I would see this - and probably will - again! |

Fun, but.... Review by: mickey, Apr 23, 2009 |
The highlight of last night's show was seeing Dolly Parton, herself, as she addressed the audience for National Adminstrative Assistant's Day (she's apparently been watching the show the past two weeks, but has not been addressing the audience.) It's a serviceable show...solid talent, good songs, and true to the original film's storyline. It never really takes off, however. It could tightened up by flushing out the song arrangements to ... read more be greater show stoppers (there is only one at the very end, and the pacing could be tightened to increase the comedy. |
