Very Monte Python. Review by: Jasmin, Dec 5, 2008 |
| Very Monte Python! I laughed a few times and enjoyed the sets, and costumes. But, yes this definitely reminded me of when I was a kid sneaking up past my bedtime to watch Monty Python. I took the kid from next door with me. He loved it and laughed through the whole thing. It was his very first Broadway show. |

Laugh-out-loud Funny Review by: DoctorJoeE, Nov 24, 2008 |
| I almost never laugh out loud at the theatre -- it's not that I don't find anything funny; it's just not in my nature to guffaw at funny lines. But I guffawed a LOT during "39 Steps" -- and that hasn't happened since the Reduced Shakespeare Company's production of "Complete Works of Shakespeare, Abridged" -- which was very similar in its whimsical, farcical style. The plot loosely (very loosely) follows that of Hitchcock's movie, and there are ... read more unsubtle passing references to all the other Hitchcock films, including the requisite profile. But there's nothing profound here, or scary -- this is pure entertainment. However, as the narrator kept reminding us in "The Drowsy Chaperone", that's why you go to the theatre -- to be entertained! The four actors (Arnie Burton, Francesca Faridany, Jeffrey Kuhn, and Sam Robards) are all superb. (Yes, THAT Sam Robards -- the son of Jason Robards and Lauren Bacall.) The first act flew by; the second dragged a bit, but still held everyone's attention. If you've seen the Hitchcock film there will be no surprises, but that wasn't the goal anyway -- the goal was to create a funny farce, and in my opinion Maria Aitken succeeded admirably. |

A good laugh! Review by: SG, Oct 31, 2008 |
| I saw the 39 steps last week and I really enjoyed it. We had seats in the 4th row balcony center and we had a great view. I enjoyed the show, they were very good actora and you could see they were also having a good time. The best parts were when they were on a rain or in a car, they move as though there is a great gust of wind and it is really very believablr. Also they make it contemporary by adding current jokes. Like in the scene where ... read more Richard Hannay is making a speech to the crowd, he wonders to himself what he can say and then he thinks and just says "Change" and it is quite funny. So go see the 39 steps, because it is just a fun way to spend the evening and have a good laugh. |

Clever but not great Review by: mld, Oct 9, 2008 |
| It was definitely clever but left me a little flat. I think it was probably a good off-broadway play in a small theater but not sure if it meets, what I feel, should be Broadway standards. |

THE 39 STEPS, BEST NON-MUSICAL Review by: Alexis, Aug 30, 2008 |
| I'm a young teenager, and hee-uge Hitchcock fan. I've seen almost everything on Broadway from Cry-Baby to Tale of Two Cities, and I have to say, THE 39 STEPS IS THE BEST NON-MUSICAL ON BROADWAY. Seriously, I thought it was so creative how 4 people played the enitre cast. I definatley recommend this show to any theater-goer. |

Hitchcock for Laughs with a Very Energetic Cast Review by: Up The Hudson, Aug 14, 2008 |
Inspired, funny and well executed. One lead actor is surrounded by three others who support him in many multiple roles. He is solid and they are amazing in turning low budget into a theatrical asset. And there is no surprise that the Tony for lighting went to this spoof of Hitchcock's "wrongly accused man" movies. It is a successful component in pulling off much of what this production does so well. Forget the Monty Python references - ... read more you won't be choking with laughter. Just expect to be genuinely amused for a couple of hours. We went with a discount, but I advise against accepting the last 2 rows of the orchestra. A couple of scenes will have partially obstructed views. |

SEE THE 39 STEPS NOW! Review by: Ginger, Jul 9, 2008 |
What a breath of fresh air it was the other night sitting in The Cort Theatre. This is a Broadway event that I have yet to witness in my 20 plus years of being a patron of Broadway. A whirlwind farcical whodunit. The love child of SPAMALOT, NOISES OFF and every Alfred Hitchcock film (literally) this show moves so quickly that there is no time to "check out." Comedic timing was pefect both in dialogue and physicality. I ... read more caught the lead's replacement in his first performance and he was outstanding! Super funny, very attractive. Finally there is a Broadway show that's not a Disney movie that I can take my 8 year old to see! Thank you for whoever is responsible for this wonderful production!

This is a great night. Review by: Broadway Fan, Jun 21, 2008 |
What a great night of theatre. Creative on all levels. Dashing lead man. It's hard to believe that four people can become dozens. The subtle and not-so-subtle Hitchcock references were something to watch for, a quick wink of the eye and it was gone Something to be seen. |

Makes you appreciate what theatre can do! Review by: Philly theatre lover, Jun 17, 2008 |
A totally delightful show! Enjoyment may depend to some degree on familiarity with Hitchcock, love for British humor, theatrical literacy and appreciation of clever theatrical tricks. It's not necessary to know the movie although it can help. But even without any of these, it can be enjoyed on its own crazy terms. Wonderful acting, lighting, costumes - just a perfect few hours. Highly recommended. |
