A Very Interesting Show! Review by: Howaluna, Feb 27, 2009 |
| I thought the play was very emotional. I really like the way it ran side by side, yet 200 years apart. The comparison was great. The actors were all excellent. |

A Moving Performance Review by: Dave, Feb 26, 2009 |
| This was a very moving play, especially for anyone who has lost a parent to disease. Jane Fonda gave a moving performance as the dying researcher, better than I expected from a Hollywood star, and the 19th century parallels with Beethoven were much less hokey than I expected. |

| Well I guess I'm in the minority here, but I did not like 33 Variations at all. I liked the Beethoven subplot and the actors who portrayed the 19th Century figures. The music of course is wonderful. However, I did not like the modern sections at all. I found the two young actors dull and unattractive and their dialogue to be vacuous and amateurish. Ms Fonda I felt was still grappling to find her character, and was not particularly interesting ... read more to watch. I thought the parallel lives of Beethoven and the researcher had promise to make an interesting play, but this potential, sadly ,was not reached. |

Review by: Zsofi, Feb 17, 2009 |
| We really enjoyed the show. We got excellent seats and the the interior of the cinema is beautiful. I especially liked Zach Grenier acting Bethowen. My husband is a researcher so he especially liked the story. I think the young couple(doughter of the researcher and the nurse) made the story suitable for a wide range of audiance. |

Fond scores a triumph in new Kaufmann play Review by: Lee, Feb 16, 2009 |
We were very impressed with all concerned. Jane Fonda gave a deeply moving portrayal of the centyral character- an eminent musicologist researching the issue of why Beethoven chose to spend so much time and energy on the Diabelli variations. The inetrwoven stories of her decline in health (think "Wit" with its central character of the Donne scholar) and Beethoven's ill health are beautifully handled and the mix of the ... read more cerebral and the emotional is quite intriguing and compelling. There are images in this play that will haunt my memory for a long time. Add to this a very elegant script and wonderful ensemble acting and you come up with a highly effective theatrical event. Highly recommended!

Excellent Theatre! We loved it! Review by: Chris212, Feb 15, 2009 |
My friend and I loved 33 Variations! Jane Fonda owned the stage -- she is is so compelling, it is a joy to see her back on Broadway! Also excellent are the rest of the cast, including Samantha Mathis (recently on Grey's Anatomy) and Colin Hanks (recently on Mad Men) and the incredible Zach Grenier (who plays Beethoven). Moises Kaufman (I Am My Own Wife and The Laramie Project) has delivered something fresh and intriguing for theatre-lovers ... read more and music-lovers alike. The staging is visually beautiful, and the story is interesting. I really didn't know much about the history of Beethoven's career before I saw this show, and I have so much more appreciation for his talent, his story, and of course, his beautiful music. ps--- Tom Hanks was in the audience to see his son's performance!! |

2nd Act need cutting.... Review by: Terry, Feb 13, 2009 |
I enjoyed the show, thought the premise and performances were good, excellent first act, 2nd act way too long. With a little cutting this could be excellent. The piano player and music was wonderful. |

Fonda Jane but not the play Review by: Bklnydaddy, Feb 13, 2009 |
| I saw 33 Variations last night and thought it was interesting at times. It was exciting to see Jane Fonda but overall the play was dull. First act was ok and the 2nd act seemed to never end. Overall good acting by all and interesting use of video in the scenic design. |

Go see it, especially with Jane Fonda as the star. Review by: The man, Feb 12, 2009 |
| I agree with the last reviewer. The play was a little different but still told a good story. And, of course, seeing Jane Fonda made it a tremendous evening. You don't have to be a classical music diehard to enjoy this play, and may even learn something while watching. |

A new, interesting adult play with a real star! Go see it! Review by: Joe, Feb 10, 2009 |
| Last night I saw 33 Variations at the first performance and I absolutely loved it! The cast is terrific and the story is interesting and Jane Fonda was terrific! It was a great example of ensemble acting. The cast works so well together. It was great to see an actress of Jane Fonda's caliber on B'way. Get a ticket now while you can! The Eugene O'Neil theater is the perfect theater for it. |
