Shrek The Musical to Open at Theatre Royal Drury Lane Next Year !

Shrek The Musical will open at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane in May next year. Based on William Steig’s book Shrek! and the Oscar-winning DreamWorks film, Shrek The Musical will be directed by Jason Moore (Avenue Q) and Rob Ashford (A Streetcar Named Desire). The show will feature music by Jeanine Tesori and choreography by Josh Prince. Book and lyrics have been written by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shrek will replace Oliver! at Theatre Royal Drury Lane.

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory to Premier at the West End !

The musical version of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory will premier at the West End on Christmas, 2011.  Based on the 1964 children book by Roald Dahl, the musical tells the story of Charlie Bucket, a poor boy who wins a day-tour at the famous chocolate factory  and a lifetime supply of chocolate. The musical will be directed by Sam Mendes and will feature a new score by the Hairspray Tony-winning team, Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.

Whoopi’s Back in the Habit!

Whoopi Goldberg will join the cast of the smash hit musical comedy SISTER ACT, for a limited run at the London Palladium!
Goldberg, who starred in the original film and is co-producer of this London musical, will make her West End debut as Mother Superior from August 10 to August 31. (Please Note: Whoopi will NOT be performing on August 16th and 23rd).

Priscilla Queen of the Desert Wins Laurence Olivier Award for Best Costumes !

As Priscilla Queen of the Desert The Musical celebrates a year in the West End, Australian costume designers Tim Chappel and Lizzy Gardiner won the 2010 Laurence Olivier Award for Best Costume Design. Chappel and Gardiner have re-created their Oscar-winning Costume Designs, originally designed for the film. For their costume designs for both the film and stage production of Priscilla they have also won an Australian Film Industry Award (AFI), British Academy of Film and Television Arts Award (BAFTA), an Academy of Film Arts and Sciences of America Award (Oscar), Helpmann Award for Costume Design and the 2008 Green Room Award for Best Costume.

Earlier this month, Pricilla Queen of the Desert was voted for the best Musical by Whatsonstage.com readers. Oliver Thornton won Best Supporting Actor in a Musical, Brian Thomson won Best Set Design and the late Ross Coleman won the award for Best Choreographer.

As a summer celebration, Sunday performances will take place between June 6 and September 5, 2010. Booking is extended until February 26, 2011.
